# AI writes the code. Who answers for it?

> AI made writing code cheap, not answering for it. What you pay a tech professional for was never the typing.

Whoever is planning to cut their tech team because AI codes now is doing the math wrong. What you pay a good tech professional for was never the typing.

## What the data shows

In March 2025, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said that within three to six months AI would be writing 90% of the code ([Business Insider](https://www.aol.com/anthropics-ceo-says-3-6-062716453.html)). Since then, Anthropic itself posted mobile engineering openings with a base salary of US$320,000 to US$405,000 a year ([posting](https://jobs.menlovc.com/companies/anthropic/jobs/52066697-engineering-manager-mobile-platform)). The contrast was pointed out by developer Konstantin Kustau in a [LinkedIn post](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/konstantin-ai-kustau_mobile-devs-anthropics-ceo-said-ai-would-share-7521211420844277761-5I05/). His line: code got cheap; owning what ships to millions of phones didn't.

It isn't just Anthropic. According to Indeed data published by CNBC in October, software development job postings in the United States rose about 15% since February 2025, while total postings fell 7% ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/11/ai-software-developer-jobs.html)). Senior roles accounted for 71% of that increase. The Indeed economist's explanation, according to the report: companies still need developers to oversee what AI produces.

And Google's DORA 2025 report, an annual survey on software engineering, shows why ([Google Cloud](https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/announcing-the-2025-dora-report)). 90% of professionals already use AI at work. AI increases delivery speed. But, according to the report, it is still associated with more instability: more changes going live means more things breaking. And 30% of professionals report little or no trust in AI-generated code.

## What moved

AI didn't take away the tech professional's job. It took away the most visible part of it. Writing code was always the part you could see. Deciding what to build, understanding where it can break, owning it when it breaks: that was always the real job. Now that's all that's left.

And it didn't get lighter. The more code comes out in less time, the more goes live, and the more someone has to understand, review and maintain. DORA sums it up in one sentence: AI doesn't fix a team, it amplifies what's already there. A team with an owner gets stronger. A team without one breaks faster.

*The lesson*

## What the owner does about it

For whoever hires, the question changed. It's no longer who codes fastest. It's who answers for what was delivered. In the interview, ask what the candidate did when something they delivered went wrong. On the team, make it clear who owns each system, by name.

For whoever works in tech, the message is the same, from the other side of the table. If you sell typing, AI competes with you. If you sell responsibility, AI works for you.

In judo, nobody wins a match because they know more throws. The one who wins is the one who holds the grip when the other squeezes. Code is the throw. Responsibility is the grip.

And a provocation for whoever is building the cost-cutting spreadsheet: if AI writes the code, who answers when it breaks at 3 a.m.? If the answer is nobody, you didn't save money. You just ended up without an owner.

## To whom much was given

"To whom much was given, of him much will be required" (Luke 12:48). AI gave a lot to those who write code: speed, reach, productivity. The bill comes with it. More power in your hands, more responsibility for what comes out of them. Whoever understands this isn't afraid of the tool. They use it, and answer for what they did.
