A plan is not an announcement

The people who need to know the plan are the ones who will carry it out with you. Everyone else sees the result.

Card with the title: A plan is not an announcement

A plan announced too early turns into three problems: energy spent explaining, opinions from people with nothing at stake and, sometimes, a heads-up to the competition.

The hook

Evandro Guedes posted a video with a strong line: the fewer people know about your life, the happier and more successful you will be (Instagram). In the caption, he talks about protecting your plans, preserving your peace and building in silence.

The line about your whole life is up for debate. The part about plans isn't. Not everyone needs to know what you are going to do.

A plan is not an announcement

When you share a plan, you deliver nothing. You just open a conversation. And every conversation about something that doesn't exist yet comes at a price.

It costs energy: you explain, defend, adjust to please whoever listened. It costs freedom: the announced plan becomes a public commitment, and changing course starts to look like failure, even when it's the right call. And it costs advantage: in business, a plan that gets around reaches people it shouldn't.

Discretion is not distrust. It isn't hiding things from the team or living in secret. It's choosing who you tell.

The lesson

Who needs to know

The rule is simple: the people who need to know the plan are the ones who will carry it out with you.

  • Those who decide with you, partner, board, family, know everything.
  • The team that will do the work knows enough to do it well.
  • Those who are only going to watch see the result.

That isn't a lack of transparency. It's focus. A leader who announces everything ahead of time ends up managing expectations instead of managing delivery.

In judo, nobody announces the throw. The entry is prepared in the grip, in the off-balance, in the timing. By the time the opponent notices, they are already on the mat. An announced throw is a defended throw.

In secret

Jesus taught: when you pray, go into your room, shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you (Matthew 6

). What is done to be seen has already received its reward. What is done in secret is still to receive it.

It's the same with a plan. Build in silence with those who build with you. When it's ready, the result speaks. And it speaks louder than any announcement.
